Glossary term Description

Dynamic positioning. A system to keep a vessel in the same position automatically using GPS, computers and thrusters. Mostly seen in specialised offshore oil exploration vessels, cable layers, dredgers and, more recently, in passenger vessels

    A  vessel designed for use in exploratory offshore drilling of new oil and gas wells or for scientific drilling purposes

    Dynamic under keel clearance. This is a computer model developed in Australian ports to allow maximum sailing draught for very large vessels, based on actual weather conditions, tide, current and vessel characteristics.


    Waste material, which is disposed of, having been used to secure cargo and packages

    dunnage material

    Materials that are not fastened firmly to the means of transport or transport container and are used to protect the goods from sweat, dirt, or mechanical stress, for instance, or as an aid in stowage (interlayer dunnage). Depending on its application, it is referred to as floor dunnage, interlayer dunnage, lateral dunnage or top dunnage


    Deadweight tonnes. Largest amount of cargo, bunkers and stores a vessel can carry

    Emission control area. IMO regulations to restrict engine emissions in certain sea areas. Currently there are two in the Baltic and North Sea (including Dover Straits). Also sulphur emission control area (SECA)
