Icarus flies too close to the sun

For the past couple of years, dredging conferences have included at least one paper on how infrastructure investors should prepare for the surge of mega container ships. The main driver of this initiative has been Danish carrier Maersk, which has pushed the capacity of its vessels beyond 11,000 teu to 14,000, 18,000 and 19,000 teu. Maybe the plan was to overwhelm its competitors with this step-change in vessel size and secure a market share the likes of MSC, OOCL, COSCO, and UASC couldn’t match. As a business model, this has failed in several ways.
