New Panamax is becoming the accepted term for post-2015 Panamax vessels, and in terms of container ships, the expanded canal will be able to handle vessels up to 366 m long, displacing 170,000 tonnes and carrying about 12,000–12,500 teu depending on ship design (currently the canal can only handle vessels up to about 5,500 teu). The canal’s new lock dimensions, which will dictate the size of ships allowed to pass through, are:

Length – 427 m

Width – 55 m

Depth – 18.3 m
