Slideshow: 60 years of containerisation

On the 26 April 1956, exactly 60 years ago today, Malcom McLean and a vessel called Ideal X began what is arguably the greatest leap forward in standardised trade and globalisation. The invention of containerised shipping allowed for efficient shipping, cutting costs and time. Today, container ships make up the third-largest fleet in the merchant navy after bulkers and tankers, and the fleet is growing.
