If digital shipping is the future of the shipping industry, then Hege Skryseth, president of Kongsberg Digital at Kongsberg Gruppen, is modern shipping’s personification.

Having been in post since 18 May 2016, Skryseth has overseen the development of Kognifai, Kongsberg’s digital platform aimed at the maritime, offshore, and renewable energy sector.

Skryseth believes that society is on the cusp of a major technological revolution, and a growing number of industries and companies are going through major changes and digital shifts. Digitalisation provides unique opportunities, which can be seen as an opportunity for new products and services.

Kognifai is Kongsberg’s open platform, which it says will enable its customers to develop cloud-based solutions for their own value-generting applications.

Skryseth led the development and launch of Kognifai and the company claims that the digital platform showcases its pioneering spirit in the digital space.

Change in the maritime industry is already gathering pace and is moving towards the adoption of digital systems in such areas as bunker prices, geographical positioning (AIS), sea charts, weather information, trade benchmarking, and other external sources are being commoditised and available for cargo owners who are willing to enter the space.

Kongsberg believes there are many solutions for the varying shipper needs rather than a single solution for all, but the shippers and carriers must operate from a position of mutual trust so that confidential information, valuable commercial data, and sensitive documents can be securely transmitted and stored with their own information, and this will ensure that the value from each individual data source is fully exploited.

It is crucial, says Skryseth, that Kongsberg’s digital platform is able to securely integrate shore- and vessel-based data within a broader context.

According to Skryseth, the industry needs to break down the silos and collaborate across departments, businesses, and even across industries in an effort to meet the challenges that digitalisation will present. Collaboration is key to creating solutions that will use the enormous data pool that will be generated and there is a lot to learn from other, more digitally mature industries.

Skryseth served as the chief administrative officer of Kongsberg Gruppen until 18 May 2016 after joining the company in 2013. She previously served as general manager at Microsoft Norge and has more than 20 years’ experience in the IT industry.

Skryseth was awarded an executive MBA from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration and a bachelor of management the Norwegian Business School.
